What Does Home EV Charger Installation Involve in New Hampshire?
Home EV charger installation in New Hampshire is a dedicated 240 volt circuit, sized to the charger, running from the panel to wherever the car parks. That is the whole of it in principle, and everything that makes one job straightforward and another complicated sits in the detail around it.
The circuit is dedicated, which means nothing else shares it. The cable is sized for the charger rather than the other way around, and the breaker protects that cable. Where the charger is hardwired the circuit terminates at the unit; where it plugs in, it terminates at a 240 volt outlet, usually a NEMA 14-50. Both are legitimate and the choice matters less than people think.
What varies is the run. A panel in an attached garage twenty feet from where the car sits is a short job. A panel in a finished basement at the opposite end of the house, with the car outside on a driveway, is a longer one, and the distance drives both the cable size and the labor. Detached garages are their own case, because a feeder to an outbuilding is a different piece of work from a single circuit.
It is permitted and inspected work in New Hampshire, which is worth knowing up front rather than discovering later.

Do You Need a Service Upgrade to Install an EV Charger?
Less often than people expect. A Level 2 charger is a substantial load and it is counted at 125 percent of its rating because it runs for hours rather than minutes, but a great many houses have room for one with no change to the service at all.
What decides it is everything else on the service. A 40 amp charger in a Bedford or Hollis house with a 200 amp service and gas heat is usually straightforward. The same charger on a 100 amp service in an older Manchester or Concord house that has already gained a heat pump and an electric water heater usually is not. The charger is identical; the house around it is not.
Where the calculation comes out short there are three genuine options. Load management throttles the car when the rest of the house is drawing heavily, and it is common enough now to be unremarkable. A smaller charger is often the quiet right answer, since a 32 amp unit still adds far more overnight than most daily driving uses. Or a service upgrade, which is worth doing anyway if the panel is also full or obsolete.
Running a load calculation before ordering the charger is the single most useful thing you can do, because all three options are easy to plan for in advance and awkward to discover afterwards.
What Size EV Charger Should You Install at Home?
Bigger is not automatically better, and this is the decision where people most often spend money they did not need to spend. The useful question is not how fast the charger can go. It is how much range you need to replace overnight.
A 32 amp charger adds roughly 25 miles of range an hour. Over a ten hour overnight window that is 250 miles, which is far more than almost any commute in southern New Hampshire consumes in a day. Somebody driving Derry to Manchester, or Nashua to Boston, or Concord to Portsmouth is not going to notice the difference between 32 and 48 amps on a weekday.
A 48 amp charger makes sense in specific cases. Two EVs sharing one charger. A genuinely long daily drive. A household that regularly comes home nearly empty and leaves early. Or simply a house with plenty of service capacity where the larger unit costs little more to install.
The trade-off is real, because a 48 amp charger needs a 60 amp circuit and is counted at 60 amps in the load calculation, which is what tips marginal houses into needing a service upgrade. Choosing 32 amps is sometimes the difference between a simple job and a much larger one, and for most drivers it changes nothing about daily life.
Where Should an EV Charger Be Installed at a New Hampshire Home?
Where the car actually parks, which sounds obvious and is worth saying because it is not always where people first suggest. A charger on the wrong wall means a cable stretched across a walkway every night, and that stops being tolerable by about week three.
Attached garages are the easy case. The panel is often in the garage or the basement directly below, the run is short, and the unit is out of the weather. Detached garages are a bigger piece of work, because feeding an outbuilding means a feeder and usually a small sub-panel rather than a single circuit, and in much of rural New Hampshire the detached garage is at the end of a driveway rather than beside the house.
Outdoor installations are entirely normal here provided the equipment is rated for it and installed properly. Winter is the real design constraint rather than a reason to avoid it. Cable management matters more than people expect when a cable is stiff at ten degrees, and mounting height matters when there is three feet of snow against the wall.
The other consideration is the future. Adding a second charger later is far cheaper if the first installation anticipated it, and in two-car households in the commuter towns that is worth thinking about once rather than twice.
How Much Does It Cost to Install an EV Charger at Home?
The honest answer is that it depends almost entirely on the run and the panel, and anyone quoting a figure before looking at both is guessing. What we can do is set out what actually moves the number, which is more useful than a range that turns out not to apply to your house.
The distance from the panel to the parking spot is the largest single factor, because it drives both the cable and the labor. A garage-mounted panel a short run from the car is at one end of the scale; a basement panel at the far corner of a house with an outdoor parking spot is at the other.
Whether the panel has a free space, and whether it has capacity, is the second factor. A straightforward circuit into an existing panel with room is one job. The same charger on a house that needs a service upgrade first is two.
Then the smaller things that add up: whether the run is through a finished space that has to be opened and made good, whether a trench is needed to a detached garage, whether the charger is hardwired or on an outlet, and whether the utility needs involving. Can You Charge an EV From a Regular Outlet?
You can, and for some people it is genuinely enough. Level 1 charging uses an ordinary 120 volt outlet and adds roughly three to five miles of range an hour. Over a twelve hour overnight it is somewhere around 40 to 60 miles, which covers a short commute and a normal week of local driving without any installation at all.
Where it stops working is easy to predict. A longer commute, a plug-in hybrid with a small battery that needs a full charge daily, a household with two cars, or a winter where cold weather is taking a real bite out of range. New Hampshire winters do affect this: a cold battery charges more slowly and a cold car uses more, so the margin that felt adequate in September can feel thin in January.
There is also a safety point worth making. If you are charging from an ordinary outlet, it should be a dedicated one in sound condition, not an extension lead and not an outlet shared with half the garage. Charging draws steadily for hours, which is exactly the duty cycle that finds a loose terminal or a tired outlet. Older houses in particular often have garage outlets that were never intended for a continuous load, which is worth having checked before relying on one nightly.
If Level 1 is working for you, there is no reason to change. If you find yourself planning around charging, that is when a dedicated circuit earns its cost.
Do You Need a Permit for EV Charger Installation in New Hampshire?
Yes. It is a new dedicated circuit, and new circuits are permitted and inspected work. The permit is pulled by the licensed electrician doing the installation and the town carries out the inspection.
That is not a formality worth resenting. An EV charger is one of the heaviest continuous loads a house will ever carry, running for hours at a time, often overnight, often unattended. It is precisely the installation where a second set of eyes on the terminations and the cable sizing has value, and it is exactly the kind of work that comes up when a house is sold.
It also matters for anything that depends on the installation being documented. Utility programs, manufacturer warranties and insurers may all want evidence the work was done properly, and a permit and a sign-off is what that evidence looks like.

Three things, in order, and doing them before the car arrives rather than after is worth a surprising amount of hassle.
First, find out whether the house has capacity. That is a load calculation and it takes minutes, and it is the one answer that determines whether this is a small job or a large one. Second, decide where the car will park and therefore where the charger goes, because the run from the panel is the biggest cost driver and it is easier to think about with the driveway empty. Third, choose the charger size based on what you actually drive rather than on the largest number available.
It is also worth thinking one step ahead about the rest of the house. If a heat pump is likely within a few years, or a finished basement, or a second EV, then the sensible service size is the one that covers all of it rather than just the car.
