Sometimes it is an overload you can fix in a minute. Sometimes it is a fault worth booking. Sometimes it is a reason to stop using the circuit today. Four questions and this tells you which.

The Breaker Is Not the Problem
A breaker that trips has done its job. It is a deliberate weak point, sized to give up before the wire behind it gets hot enough to matter, and it is the cheapest and most replaceable thing on the circuit for exactly that reason. When it goes, something asked the circuit for more than the wire can carry, or current found a path it should not have.
That is why replacing a breaker with a bigger one is the most dangerous thing a homeowner can do at a panel. It does not fix anything. It raises the point at which the protection gives up, above the point at which the wire starts to overheat, and it moves the failure from a tripped breaker to a fire inside a wall.
Overload, Short Circuit, Ground Fault, Arc Fault
Four different things trip breakers and they behave differently. An overload is slow: too much load for too long, and the breaker warms and lets go, usually a minute or two after the last thing was switched on. A short circuit is instant and often loud. A ground fault is current escaping to earth, which is what a GFCI watches for and why it trips at a few thousandths of an amp. An arc fault is the signature of a damaged cable or a loose connection sparking, which is what an AFCI is listening for.
Working out which one you have is most of the diagnosis, and the pattern tells you more than anything else: what is on when it goes, how quickly it goes after that, and whether it will reset at all.

Is It Safe to Keep Resetting a Breaker?
Once, to see whether it was a one-off, is reasonable. Repeatedly is not. The breaker is not the problem; it is the thing telling you about the problem, and resetting it over and over is turning the smoke alarm off rather than looking for the fire. If it trips again immediately, leave it off and get it looked at.
Can I Just Fit a Bigger Breaker?
No, and this is the single most dangerous thing a homeowner does with a panel. The breaker is sized to protect the wire behind it, not the appliance in front of it. Putting a 20 amp breaker on wire rated for 15 means the wire can now get hot enough to start a fire before the breaker ever notices. If the circuit is genuinely too small, the fix is a new circuit.
Why Does My GFCI Trip When Nothing Seems Wrong?
A GFCI is not watching for overload, it is watching for current going somewhere it should not, and it trips at a few thousandths of an amp. Damp in an outdoor outlet, a slightly failing appliance heater element, or a long circuit with several outlets on it can all do it. Nuisance tripping is real, but it is diagnosed by elimination rather than assumed.
What Is an AFCI and Why Is It so Sensitive?
It looks for the electrical signature of arcing, which is what a damaged cable or a loose connection does before it sets fire to something. They are required on most living-space circuits in new work. They are more sensitive than a normal breaker on purpose, and some older appliances with brushed motors do set them off, but an AFCI tripping is worth taking seriously before it is written off as nuisance.
Is a Tripping Breaker Always the Wiring?
No. In our experience the most common cause is an overloaded circuit, which is a usage problem, and the second most common is a single failing appliance. The wiring itself is further down the list. That is why it is worth unplugging everything on the circuit and adding things back one at a time before anybody is called.
