What Electrical Work Does a New Hampshire Kitchen Remodel Need?
Kitchen remodel electrical work in a New Hampshire house is almost always larger than people budget for, and the reason is that a modern kitchen is the most electrically demanding room in a house by a wide margin. It is not one or two circuits. Current requirements call for a considerable number of them, and most older New Hampshire kitchens have a fraction of what a new one needs.
The list is long because the code is specific. Two dedicated small appliance circuits for the countertop outlets, at minimum. A dedicated circuit for the dishwasher. Another for the garbage disposal. Another for the refrigerator. A range or cooktop circuit, which is 240 volts and substantial. A microwave circuit if it is built in. Lighting on its own circuit or circuits, separate from the outlets.
Then the requirements about placement rather than quantity. Countertop outlets have to be spaced so that no point along the counter is more than a set distance from one. Island and peninsula counters have their own rules. All of it needs GFCI protection, and most of it needs AFCI protection too.
A kitchen from the 1970s frequently has two circuits doing all of that, which is why the electrical scope on a kitchen remodel surprises people who were thinking about cabinets. Getting from two circuits to ten is new circuits run from the panel rather than anything that can be done at the outlet.
That is as true of a 1970s kitchen in Nashua, Derry or Salem as it is of a farmhouse kitchen around Henniker or Hopkinton, and we plan kitchens across New Hampshire on the same basis.
How Many Circuits Does a Kitchen Need?
More than most people guess, and in a full remodel it is common to be adding six to ten circuits to a kitchen that previously had two or three.
The two small appliance circuits are the baseline and they are genuinely a minimum rather than a target. They serve the countertop outlets and the dining area, and they may not serve lighting. In practice a kitchen with a lot of counter frequently wants more than two, because a kettle, a toaster and a coffee machine on one circuit is exactly the overload scenario that causes nuisance tripping for the next twenty years.
Dedicated circuits are required for the fixed appliances because each of them is a substantial load that should not be sharing. The dishwasher, the disposal, the refrigerator and a built-in microwave each get their own. A range or cooktop needs a 240 volt circuit sized to the appliance, and an induction range is a bigger load than the gas range it often replaces. Range, dryer and other heavy appliance feeds are dedicated circuits by requirement rather than by preference.
Lighting is separate again. Under-cabinet, recessed, pendants over an island and general ceiling lighting are usually split across circuits and switched in zones. Kitchen and under-cabinet lighting is worth designing rather than defaulting, because a kitchen with one ceiling fixture and no task lighting is a kitchen people complain about regardless of how the cabinets look.
When Should Electrical Work Happen in a Kitchen Remodel?
In two visits at specific moments, and getting the sequencing right is most of what makes a remodel run smoothly rather than badly.
The first is rough-in, after demolition and framing and before anything closes up. Every cable is run, every box is set, the panel work is done, and it is inspected before insulation and drywall go in. This is the moment that cannot be revisited cheaply, and it is why the electrical layout has to be decided before the walls close rather than when the cabinets arrive.
The second is trim-out, after the cabinets and counters are in. Devices, fixtures, under-cabinet lighting, appliance connections and the final inspection.
What causes trouble is deciding things late. Where the island goes determines whether there is a floor feed under it, and a floor feed is nearly impossible to add once the subfloor is closed. Whether the range is gas or induction changes the circuit entirely. Whether there is a microwave drawer, a wine fridge, a second oven or a pot filler all change the rough-in. Choose the appliances before rough-in rather than after, even if they are not bought yet, because the wiring is decided by what is going in.
Does a Kitchen Remodel Need a Permit in New Hampshire?
The electrical work does, and it is inspected twice, once at rough-in before anything is closed up and once at final after everything is in. The permit is pulled by the licensed electrician and the town carries out both inspections.
The rough-in inspection is the one that matters most and the one that most affects the schedule. Nothing can be closed up until it passes, which means drywall cannot go on, which means every trade behind it waits. A delay at rough-in inspection is one of the more common causes of a kitchen remodel slipping, and it is largely avoidable by having the work ready when the inspector arrives rather than nearly ready. Remodel and addition electrical work is planned around those two inspection dates rather than around the cabinet delivery.
The value of the permit outlasts the project. A kitchen is the room buyers look at hardest and a remodel without a record of inspected electrical work is a question at every future sale.

Should You Rewire During a Kitchen Remodel?
If the house has old wiring, this is by a distance the cheapest moment you will ever get, and passing it up is a decision people regret.
The expensive part of rewiring is access. Opening walls, fishing cable through cavities, then patching, priming and painting. During a kitchen remodel the walls are already open, the cabinets are already off, the floor is already up in places, and there is already a contractor on site making good. The marginal cost of running new circuits to the rest of the floor while the kitchen is stripped is a fraction of what the same work costs as a standalone job.
It applies most in the older New Hampshire stock where the kitchen is being remodeled precisely because the house is old. A farmhouse around Henniker, Hopkinton, Warner or Bradford, or an older house in Manchester, Concord or Keene, very often has knob and tube wiring or cloth-covered cable still live somewhere, and the kitchen wall is frequently the route to it.
The same logic applies to the panel. If the service is 100 amps and the remodel is adding an induction range, a dishwasher and a microwave to a house that also has plans for a heat pump, that is the conversation to have now rather than in two years. Panel and service work done alongside a remodel is far less disruptive than done on its own.
What Lighting Does a Kitchen Need?
Layers, and the failure in most kitchens is having only one of them. A single ceiling fixture in the middle of the room puts the cook in their own shadow at every counter, which is a lighting problem no amount of brightness fixes.
Ambient lighting fills the room, and recessed fixtures spread across the ceiling do it well provided they are laid out for the room rather than in a grid that ignores where the cabinets are. Task lighting is the one that actually matters day to day, meaning under-cabinet lighting onto the counter where the work happens, and pendants over an island or a peninsula. Accent lighting inside glass cabinets or above them is optional and is where a kitchen starts to look considered rather than merely lit.
Controls decide whether any of it gets used. Zoning the layers separately means the room can be fully lit for cooking and dimmed to something civilized afterwards. Dimmers on the ambient and accent layers do most of that work, and they need to be specified to suit the fixtures rather than assumed.
The mistake worth avoiding is deciding lighting after the cabinets are designed. Under-cabinet lighting needs a chase and a switch loop planned at rough-in, and recessed layout depends on where the wall cabinets land.
How Long Does the Electrical Work Take in a Kitchen Remodel?
The electrician is on site for less time than people expect, but at two moments that the rest of the schedule bends around.
Rough-in on a typical kitchen is usually a couple of days, depending on how much has to be run and how accessible the routes are. Panel work, if there is any, adds to that and involves the power being off for part of a day. Then a wait for the rough-in inspection, which is scheduled by the town rather than by anyone on site, and that wait is frequently the longest part.
Trim-out is usually a day, sometimes less, once the cabinets and counters are in and the appliances are on site. Final inspection follows.
The thing that stretches it is discovery. Opening a wall in an older house and finding knob and tube, undersized cable, junctions made outside boxes or a circuit feeding something nobody knew about all change the scope. It is not padding and it is not upselling. It is work that was always needed and was invisible until the wall came off, which is another argument for looking at what is behind the kitchen before the schedule is fixed.
What Should You Decide Before Starting a Kitchen Remodel?
The appliances, the layout and the lighting, in that order, and all of them before rough-in rather than during it.
Appliances decide circuits. Gas or induction range is a completely different circuit. Built-in microwave, second oven, wine fridge, warming drawer and pot filler each add something. Knowing the models is ideal; knowing the types is the minimum.
Layout decides routes. Where the island sits determines whether a floor feed is needed and where it has to come up, and that is one of the few things in a kitchen that is genuinely difficult to change afterwards. Counter runs determine outlet spacing. Where the sink goes determines the disposal and dishwasher feeds.
Lighting decides the ceiling and the cabinet chases, both of which are closed at rough-in. Deciding it late is how kitchens end up with one fixture and an extension lead under a cabinet. How Many Outlets Does a Kitchen Counter Need?
Enough that no point along the countertop is more than a set distance from one, which in practice means outlets spaced regularly along every run of counter. Islands and peninsulas have their own requirements. The rule exists so nobody ends up running an extension lead across a wet counter.
Does an Induction Range Need a Different Circuit Than a Gas One?
Very much so. A gas range needs only a standard outlet for the igniter and controls. An induction or electric range needs a dedicated 240 volt circuit sized to the appliance, which is one of the heaviest loads in the house. Switching from gas to induction during a remodel changes the electrical scope significantly.
Can the Electrician Work While the Cabinets Are Being Installed?
Not usefully. Electrical work happens in two visits with the cabinet installation between them: rough-in before anything closes up, then trim-out once the cabinets and counters are in. Trying to overlap them tends to cost more time than it saves.
What Happens If the Rough-In Inspection Fails?
The work is corrected and re-inspected, and nothing can be closed up until it passes. That is why a failed rough-in inspection delays every trade behind it. It is largely avoidable by having the work genuinely finished when the inspector arrives rather than nearly finished.
Do I Need GFCI Protection in a Kitchen?
Yes, on the countertop outlets and generally on the kitchen circuits, and most kitchens being remodeled did not have it before. AFCI protection is required on most living-space circuits too. Both are part of bringing a kitchen up to current requirements rather than optional extras.
Can I Keep My Existing Kitchen Wiring in a Remodel?
Sometimes in part, but rarely in whole. A kitchen from the 1970s usually has two or three circuits where a current one needs considerably more, and the existing cable may be ungrounded or undersized. Keeping what is sound and adding the rest is normal; keeping all of it usually is not.
Should I Add a Circuit for a Future Appliance?
If there is any chance of it, yes, and rough-in is the only cheap moment. A spare circuit run to a location while the wall is open costs very little. The same circuit added later, once the kitchen is finished, means opening the wall again and making good.
